OmegaScore® personalised omega-3 testing is available exclusively from Lipid Analytical Labs (Guelph, ON, Canada) and CanAlt (Toronto, ON, Canada, canaltlabs.com) whom have acquired specialized paper strip technology which can be mailed in for laboratory analysis for a fully personalized fatty acid profile. The OmegaScore® is a very strong indicator of the risk for sudden cardiac death based on published studies from the Harvard School of Public Health in the New England Journal of Medicine1. Furthermore, a high OmegaScore® is related to a reduced risk for "all-cause mortality2" and "cognitive deterioration with aging3"; all of which will be provided to you in an easy to interpret report.

If the lab results indicate a low OmegaScore®, individuals can initiate an increased intake of omega-3 fatty acids from food sources (e.g. fish/seafood) and/or supplements containing EPA/DHA. If the latter intake modifications are done on a regular basis, one can expect their Omega Score to be favourably altered to be in the low risk zone for the above health conditions. Re-testing of the Omega Score can be done after 4-8 weeks to confirm entry into the "low risk" zones.

Analysis Platform - GC-FID

Method Summary

This method determines the fatty acid composition (including DHA, EPA, and DPA) of whole blood in relative (area %) values using a bonded polyglycol liquid phase in a flexible fused silica capillary column. The esterification of these fatty acids to fatty acid methyl esters is performed using an alkylation derivatization reagent. Methyl esters offer excellent stability and provide quick and quantitative samples for GC analysis. GC analysis provides a comprehensive profile that allows practitioners to accurately assess the content and profile of fatty acids in their oil product. Fatty acids are extracted in the presence of the internal standard using a priority solvent mixture. The fatty acid methyl esters are transmethylated. The resulting fatty acid methyl esters are then analyzed on an Agilent 7890B gas-liquid chromatograph with a 60-m DB-23 capillary column (0.32 mm internal diameter) against their internal standard. Data is reported in % fatty acid methyl ester by weight.

Sample Requirement

  • Small blood samples (a drop or two provided after using provided lancet on a finger, deposited on provided specialized absorbent pads.)
  • Blood samples may alternatively be provided via appropriate medical receptacles.
